My Delicious African Meat Pie

African Meat Pie

African Meat Pie is a real treat. It is crispy on the outside, and supple and succulent on the inside. It can be eaten with a cup of tea, coffee, or a glass of juice.

How is African Meat Pie done?

The process of making the African Meat Pie can be divided into three parts: preparing the filling, making the pastry, and assembling the pie. It is recommended to start with the filling and allow it to cool while you prepare the pastry.

The filling can be made with either ground meat or fish. In this recipe, I will show you how to make it with meat.

African meat pie filling is prepared similarly to the African meatball recipe. The meat is fried with all the ingredients without adding oil because the meat already contains oil. When the filling is ready, set it aside to cool down. Meanwhile, start making the dough. Put all dry ingredients in a bowl, then rub the butter with it. Afterward, add the wet ingredients and knead with your hands to get a dough.

Now, you can put the pastry and the filling together. To do that, you need to form circles from the dough first. To form the circles, you can use a pastry cutter if you have one, if not you can use a small musli bowl. Next, you can put about a spoonful of filling in each circle then close and seal the edges with a fork. Alternatively to the fork, you can also use a dumpling maker to close and seal the pie. Then place the Meat pie in a baking tray and bake.

Ingredients

For the pastry

  • 500 g self raising flour
  • 225 g butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 50 ml milk or water
  • ¼ tsp salt

For the filling

  • 500 g ground beef meat
  • 500 g ground pork mince
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 3 spring onion
  • 5 garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp white pepper
  • 2 medium carrots chopped
  • 2 bell peppers chopped
  • salt to taste
  • 1 hot pepper optional

Instructions

Start with the meat pie filling

  • Place the meat in the pot, stir and cook for about 2 minutes, then add the onion, salt, black pepper, white pepper, tomato paste, spring onion, garlic and parsley, simmer on low heat for a few minutes. Do not forget to stir frequently to avoid burning.
  • Add the carrots and bell pepper. Let cook on low heat for about 2 minutes, then add hot pepper, let it simmer for another few minutes.
  • Taste, add salt if necessary, then remove from stove and let it cool.

Continue with the meat pie pastry

  • Put the flour, nutmeg and salt in a bowl. Mix them together with a spoon.
  • Add the butter and rub the butter with the mixture until you get a homogeneous mixture.
  • Make a hole in the mixture and add 3/4 of the beaten eggs and milk.
  • Knead with washed hands, if the mixture is too sticky, add a little flour. Wrap the dough in cling film and let it rest for at least 15 minutes.

Forming Meat Pie

  • Share the dough into two parts. Place one dough on a work surface (sprinkle the surface with flour to prevent sticking) and flatten it using a rolling pin.
  • Using a bowl or something else, cut out circles by pressing the bowl on the flattened dough.
  • Scoop about one tablespoon of meat pie filling into each circle.
  • Fold the pie over, press gently with the fingers and seal the edges using a fork. Then place it on a baking tray.
  • Brush the surface of the pie with the remaining 1/4 of the beaten eggs. Pierce each meat with a fork. Repeat the process for all circles and bake them by 150°C for about 20 minutes until they are golden brown.
  • They are ready to be served. Enjoy it with a cup of tea or coffee.
